So, Mega Evolution, huh? Of all the spangly new additions that Pokémon X and Y brought to the formula, this was probably the most controversial.
As we know, the Pokémon franchise gets a lot of stick for resting on its laurels. It may mark each new game by generations instead of sequels, but sequelitis is definitely a thing here.
Tier Mega Pokemon Criteria Comment; Uber: Gengar, Rayquaza: Quick to mega evolve, Strong mega ability, High base power, Typing has few resistance: Ubers are so strong, they are good picks in almost every stage, even when they are NVE. Rayquaza should only be used with mega start or max candied, otherwise its speed will prevent it from its true.
Evolution, not revolution. That’s the key. The second generation of games, for instance, added breeding and baby Pokémon. It also threw in the Dark type, just to stop those rampaging Psychics from trampling everyone else into cubes of sad, defeated spam.
Until Pokémon Sun and Moon, the general series gameplay remained the same: travel between the gyms, nab all the badges, become the very best like no-one ever was. Along the way, a bumbling Evil Team™ and a rival will appear to mildly inconvenience you.
Mega Evolution seemed like a fantastic idea from the outset. A way to make previously unloved and forgotten Pokémon relevant again! What’s not to like? Sadly, the mechanic proved to have mixed results. Only a select group of Pokémon are able to Mega Evolve. Some have no business doing so, and some definitely aren’t that great when they do. You never know what you’re going to get.
Buckle up for a rundown of the worst (and the best) Mega Evolutions in the franchise.

30 WORST: Mega Glalie- The Angry One
Now, don’t get me wrong here. In my eyes, Glalie is the perfect target for a Mega Evolution. A Pokémon that’s totally underappreciated, always passed over in favor of its alternate evolution, Froslass (which is a dang rare sight in itself).
Statistically, though, Mega Glalie is still totally lackluster. Its signature party trick, a Refrigerate-boosted Ice-type Explosion, is darn powerful, but is that really where you want your precious Megas slot to go? Furious floating snow-beard heads just don’t really cut it around here.
29 BEST: Mega Rayquaza- The Broken One
Now, I need to have words with somebody here. Who was the person at Game Freak who said, “Hey, remember Rayquaza? That super-strong OP mixed sweeper that makes even the staunchest Poké-battler lose control? Let’s make it even more broken. You know, just for the meme’s sake.”
As Liam Neeson did not say in Taken, I have no idea who you are, and I can’t find you, but… I don’t really like you and I’m going to tell my mom on you. Mega Rayquaza has absurd stats and doesn’t need to hold a Mega Stone, which isn’t even funny.
advertising
28 WORST: Mega Aerodactyl- The Speedy One
Again, I’m not just talking needless smack here. From a design point of view, I must admit that Aerodactyl is probably one of my favorite Megas. I mean, you’ve got to have a special kind of chutzpah to be able to pull off a goatee made of rock. That’s admirable, right there.
It’s just… this thing’s the very definition of middle of the road. It’s not bad, per se, but it just can’t do anything that others can’t do better. It’s very fast (base 150) and moderately powerful, but there are many others that can perform the sweeping role better.
27 BEST: Mega Mawile- The Bitey One
As we saw with Glalie, it’s always neat when a forgotten Pokémon is given a chance to shine in Mega form. Glalie didn’t really have the tools to do so, but do you know who did? Freaking Mawile, that’s who.
In the early days of X and Y, this obscure Steel-type’s time finally came. Bolstered by its excellent Steel/Fairy typing, coverage and ability (Pure Power, which gives it the highest attack stat in the game), Mega Mawile remains a meta menace. In Trick Room, this little thing is a whole bucket full of hurt and sadness.
advertising
26 WORST: Mega Banette- The Tricky One
Once again, I find myself a little conflicted here. I wanted to like Mega Banette. Its whole design is about the biggest trope there is, and Mega Banette is pulling it off in style.
Looks aside, though, it doesn’t bring all that much to the table. Its high attack power is tough to implement with its awkward speed, and its party trick (priority Destiny Bond) has become a little predictable.
25 BEST: Mega Gengar- The Trapping One
If you really want to see how Ghost-type Pokémon do Mega Evolution where I come from, look no further than Mega Gengar. With this guy, Game Freak really did create a monster.
Firstly, just what in heckola is going on with those tiny stumpy legs? Secondly, why Shadow Tag? Thirdly, why Shadow Tag and Perish Song? Mega Gengar sports some dang high Special Attack, but it’s most often seen on devious Perish Trap teams. As such, it’s not a good time in any kind of way.
advertising
24 WORST: Mega Houndoom- The Also-Ran One
I can respect Mega Houndoom. I totally, totally can. The whole concept is great. It’s a Pokémon that sorely deserved a Mega form, and said form is actually different and interesting. All in all, I give this thing seven thumbs up.
There’s a slight snag, though. Its ability is Solar Power, which drains a little health each turn (in sun) in exchange for a boost to its Special Attack. It’s made for sun teams, in short, which tend to be presided over by a different Mega evolution (you know the one). You can’t run both, making poor Houndoom quite redundant.
23 BEST: Mega Lopunny- The Scrappy One
Now, let’s pretend that the internet hasn’t given poor Lopunny a bad name with questionable fan art. Let’s put all of that to one side and appreciate the fact that its Mega form is all kinds of good.
It may not be right at the top tier of Megas, but it’s not to be underestimated either. A fast and powerful attacker, it can sweep through weakened teams with ease with its good STAB. Thanks to Scrappy, it isn’t shut down by Ghost-types, and is the only Pokémon that can land a super effective Fighting move on Aegislash.
advertising
22 WORST: Mega Audino- The White Mage One
Maybe it’s my status as a lifelong Final Fantasy fan, but I was instantly drawn to Mega Audino’s design. That’s an angelic/White Mage-ish looking thing, right there, and that’s a life I’m certain about.
Sadly, Mega Audino soon sank straight down to the bad tiers over on competitive community Smogon, which makes perfect sense. With its bulky defensive stats, it’s best suited to be a sort of cleric or pivot. These are great qualities for lots of teams, but that’s not really where you want your mega slot to be going.
21 BEST: Mega Beedrill- The Super-Upgraded One
As far as I’m concerned, this is the very essence of how Mega Evolution should have been done. Beedrill, one of the most hilariously awful Pokémon of all time, is a powerhouse. It’s not OP, with some real flaws (read: its defenses are so bad it’ll faint if a newborn kitten sneezes in its general direction from 500 yards away), but it’s very usable.
As feeble as it is, Mega Beedrill is a very powerful and speedy sweeper.
If you support it well and play carefully, it can win games in an instant.
advertising
20 WORST: Mega Sceptile- The Silly-Tail One
Now, I feel some kind of way writing this. Mega Sceptile is my favorite Mega of all, and I’ve certainly had some success using it. It’s just… totally sub-par.
It’s not a bad Pokémon at all. That Grass/Dragon was exclusive until Alolan Exeggutor, and it has some neat coverage to support it. Speed, decent power, a hilarious Christmas tree of a tail, what’s not to like?
The sad fact is, it just doesn’t excel like other Megas do. It cannot break a special wall, and it just doesn’t have the power to go physical. I’m still a huge fan, though.
19 BEST: Mega Swampert- The Lifting One
Let’s just settle that debate forever, right here and now. Yes, this guy most certainly does lift.
For Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, new Mega Evolutions were added. These included the Sinnoh starter trio, as we’ve seen, and Sceptile didn’t fare all that well. Swampert is another interesting one, and it’s just fantastic to use.
Traditionally, this guy’s been very defensive, but with Swift Swim, Mega Swampert can take on a much more offensive role. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen this huge, absurd creature on a rain team, barrelling through the opposition at doubled speed.
advertising
18 WORST: Mega Garchomp- The Backwards One
Now, I don’t quite understand what went wrong here. We’re talking about Garchomp, one of the most commonly-used a formidable Pokémon in standard play. Surely its Mega form was going to be something to dang well behold?
Well, it was, but not for the right reasons. Thanks to some shonky stats, it’s not as usable as Garchomp’s vanilla form. Awkward speed really goes against what Garchomp is all about. Still, those twin scythe-arms are totally intimidating, and nobody can take that away from Mega Garchomp.
17 BEST: Mega Charizard Y- The Sunny One
Earlier, we saw the sad fate of Mega Houndoom. It’s perfectly good, in and of itself, but it’s pretty well completely invalidated by one unfortunate fact: Mega Charizard exists. It’s here, it’s now, and we just have to dang well get used to it.
In earlier generations, you didn’t see too much of Charizard. It was tough to use, with Stealth Rock mangling it if it dared so much as step a toe onto the battlefield. X and Y revitalized Charizard, giving it two Mega Evolutions to choose from. Charizard Y is a fearsome sun sweeper with the Drought ability.
advertising
16 WORST: Mega Absol- The Edgy One
Few Mega Pokémon designs have divided opinion like Absol does. After all, as we all told our parents back in the nineties, there’s a fine line between being cool and trying too hard to be cool.
Is Mega Absol the edgiest edgelord who ever lived, or is it simply trying to give that impression?
The jury’s still out on that one.
Controversial design decisions aside, Mega Absol is a tough one to use. The thing about Mega forms is that they can’t hold a damage-boosting item, and their increased stats don’t always make up for that. It’s super frail, too.
15 BEST: Mega Lucario- The Adaptable One
Lucario has always been a super versatile sort of Pokémon. There aren’t many true mixed attackers to choose from around here, but Lucario is certainly equipped for the job. This Steel- and Fighting-type hits from both sides of the spectrum and is equally adept at both. You never quite know what kind of set you’re going to be dealing with.
Mega Lucario takes this trait a step further, with its boosted offenses and Adaptability. Those Close Combats are probably enough to level a whole planet. Frightening stuff.
14 WORST: Mega Abomasnow- The Worst Weather One
So, we’ve seen the menace that is Charizard Y. This thing was almost singlehandedly responsible for making sun a threat again, with its weather-boosted Overheats being the stuff of nightmares a few years back.
The sad fact is, weather effects are not created equal. Usually, it’s rain that is deemed the most effective, while hail is the least. Which Mega Pokémon is the poster child of hail? That’s right, it’s poor old Mega Abomasnow. This thing can be effective, but its shortcomings (reliance on Trick Room, weaknesses to freaking everything ever) are tough to overcome.
13 BEST: Mega Metagross: The Steely One
Now, granted, the Steel-type took a bit of a hit in the transition to generation six. It had so many dang resistances that it had to lose a couple, and so it became neutral to Dark and Ghost. This move, naturally, weakened Steel/Psychic types, who were previously neutral to these types.
Metagross is one of them. Did it let this get it down, though? You’d better believe it didn’t. Steel’s strength against the ever-present Fairies made it more potent than ever. It’s a physical force to reckon with and isn’t lacking defensively either.
advertising
12 WORST: Mega Sharpedo- The Sharky One
Here we go again, friends. I’ve already touched on the fact that it’s darn difficult for a speedy, frail Mega in today’s tough world, and Mega Sharpedo knows this as well as anyone.
Now, Sharpedo has never been known for being able to take a hit. It’s one of the frailest Pokémon around. The Mega alleviates a little of this, and it does have the Strong Jaw ability to help with its damage, but still. How often do you see this thing around? Almost never, that’s how often.
11 BEST: Mega Venusaur: The Tanky One
Naturally, with Charizard getting a Mega evolution, there was no question that Venusaur and Blastoise would too. Charizard may have gotten two, but we’re not going to get persnickety about that.
What’s important here is that Mega Venusaur is super darn good.
As you may have seen so far, Mega Pokémon tend to focus on attack, not defense. Venusaur is one of the defensively-inclined Megas and its tailor fit for the role. Its ability, Thick Fat, negates its two biggest weaknesses, Fire and Ice, making it a real tank coupled with its great stats. It can deal some damage too.
advertising
10 WORST: Mega Alakazam- The Moustachey One
Come on, now, Alakazam. We’ve spoken about this already. What happens when you put all of your eggs into one basket (albeit a super powerful and speedy one)? That’s right, you’re hit with a sucker punch. In your case, it’s often literally a Sucker Punch.
Mega Alakazam takes everything that Alakazam is and dials it up to eleven. A potent and speedy special attacker, but canny players will have to take care around priority moves. These will do a number on Mega ‘zam, which cannot take being hit by much of anything at all.
9 BEST: Mega Kangaskhan- The Scary One
Oh, Mega Kangaskhan. It’s been quite an emotional rollercoaster with this thing, let me tell you.
When Mega Kang was first revealed, we didn’t quite understand what we were getting ourselves into. Stats-wise, it didn’t look that formidable. The trouble here was its ability, Parental Bond. This gave it a second hit on its attacks, at half the power of this first. This amounted to a free Choice Band. Its potential was soon clear, and this thing was everywhere.
For Pokémon Sun and Moon, Knagaskhan took a much needed nerf. Parental Bond now only deals a quarter of the damage.
advertising
8 WORST: Mega Gyarados - The Shrimpy One
As my dear old mom always used to say, Mega doesn’t always mean better. I mean, granted, she’s never actually said that in her life, but if she ever did, she’d be totally right. The instinct is often to Mega Evolve straight away, but you shouldn’t always.
What if you need Mawile’s Intimidate? Or Manectric’s Lightning Rod? What is Gyarados goes from resisting Fighting moves to being weak to them? This is the trouble with the Water/Dark Mega Gyarados. Its regular form is so good, so useful, that you don’t want to go that route a lot of the time.
7 BEST: Mega Gardevoir- The Singing One
Now, see, this I can appreciate. There’s something admirable about a Pokémon that is totally goal-oriented. They have their dreams, they’re focused on them, and they will not be sidetracked. They’re the achievers, the high-fliers, and they’re just unstoppable.
This is an important trait in people, too, but Mega Gardevoir just nails it. It’s here on this Earth for one reason, and one reason only: to Hyper Voice absolutely everyone. Prior to the Pixiliate ability’s nerf, this thing was feared for exactly this reason. It’ still nothing to mess with.
advertising
6 WORST: Mega Latios/Latias- The Same Darn One
Now, I’m not quite sure what it is about these two, but I just can’t support what’s happened here. Granted, Latios and Latias were designed to look super, super similar (as the ‘Eon twins’), but… look at the two Mega designs.
This isn't even one of those cheap palette swaps that Mortal Kombat used to pull in the nineties. They’re the same darn thing.
The trouble with these two is, there’s as much reason to use the regular form as there is to choose the Mega. Latios, for instance, would often prefer a Choice Scarf to a Mega Stone.
5 BEST: Mega Salamence- The Croissant-Looking One
Here we see the raw power of the internet, at its meme-making best. I never thought I’d see the day when a 250lb fearsome, slavering dragon would become a flaky French breakfast pastry, but there it is. Once you see that croissant in the odd shape of its wings, you can never unsee it.
Never mind all of that, though. Mega Salamence is a formidable opponent, with its towering stats and Aerilate ability. This gives it STAB on very powerful moves like Double Edge, allowing it to break through all kinds of opponents.
4 WORST: Mega Slowbro- The Shell One
It’s tough to pull off the whole defensive Mega thing, as I say. Mega Venusaur is a perfect fit, because it can dish out the damage too and some of its major weaknesses are negated. It serves well as part of a backbone for a team because it isn’t too passive.
As a general rule, you want to hop straight in there, Mega Evolve, then immediately start smiting like the smiting-est powerhouse who ever… smote. Mega Slowbro is not about this life at all, taking a lot of time to set itself up. It’s one of the least user-friendly Megas.
3 BEST: Mega Diancie- The Fabulous One
Now, sadly, you won’t get an opportunity to use Mega Diancie often. As a mythical Pokémon, it is only available through special events, which tends to mean that it’s forbidden in competitive play. The VGC format, for instance, only permits the use of these Pokémon during special online tournaments.
Meanwhile, standard formats, such as Smogon OU, understand what a fantastic Pokémon Mega Diancie is. With its respectable speed and defences, and mixed offenses backed by the excellent coverage of Rock/Fairy STAB, this is one of the most feared attackers in the tier.
2 WORST: Mega Camerupt- The Camel One
Once again, I do not mean to talk smack about Mega Camerupt here. I’m a huge fan of hyper offensive play and Trick Room is great for that. As such, you’d better believe that I’ve seen the damage this unassuming camel can do.
It’s very, very strong in Trick Room, given the proper support. At the same time, though, it’s very vulnerable without it. About as slow as it gets, Mega Camerupt has some unfortunate weaknesses and can be picked off by just about anything if you lose momentum.
1 BEST: Mega Heracross- The Muscular One
A controversial choice, for sure, Mega Heracross is another Pokémon that tends to divide opinion. It’s super strong, there’s no doubt about that, but it just doesn’t have the point and shoot factor that a lot of the top Megas (see: Kangaskhan) can offer.
This Skill-Linkin’, Arm-Thrustin’ machine is held back by its base speed, which drops ten points from its vanilla form. This is a pain because it leaves it too fast for Trick Room, but too slow to sweep by itself. Nevertheless, if you can back it up, you’ve got a real powder keg on your hands.

Rayquaza (Japanese: レックウザRekkuuza) is a Dragon/Flying-typeLegendary Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is the version mascot for Pokémon Emerald.
It is a member of the Weather Trio, alongside Kyogre and Groudon, serving as the Trio Master.
Biology
Physiology
Rayquaza is a long green serpentine Pokémon with yellow eyes. It has pink lining on the mouth. It has yellow, linked, circular markings on its entire body. In Mega form, it has a Delta-shaped jaw on its mouth and an elongated serpent body. As Mega Rayquaza, it is more aggressive and powerful.
As a natural ability, Rayquaza can float and control the speed, direction and altitude of it's levitation. Despite not having used any of these characteristics in battle throughout its appearances in the anime, all the Rayquazas have very sharp claws on the hands, very sharp teeth and a very powerful constrictor body. It's not known if Mega Rayquaza can use its energy whips/tentacles as weapons or regular body members. Naturally, given it can travel through the ozone layer safely and even higher layers of Earth's atmosphere, it demands very little air to live and possibly none. If none, it could possibly travel through space, since the layer that intermediates the Ozone layer and the troposphere can hit -60 °C or -76 F. If the belief that Rayquaza is responsible for destroying meteors still in the higher atmospheric layers is true, it would have to be able to endure temperatures that can reach -100 °C, or even -148 F. It shows that Rayquaza have an great resistance to cold, which is ironic since it has double weakness to the Ice-typing. Despite its resistance, it is not known if Rayquaza can endure the -270 °C or -454 F of an absolute space vacuum.
Due to its nature of absorbing the ozone layer particles, if Rayquaza is at Alola region, it is a direct predator of Minior, should the latter Pokémon died in its core form at limited time and had its particles become one with the universe for Rayquaza to feed.
Behavior
Rayquaza seems to be a very aggressive and territorial Pokémon, shown when it attacked a Deoxys. Yet, its aggression toward Deoxys could derive from the belief that Rayquaza is commissioned with the natural duty of shielding Earth from meteorites and similar threats, as was hinted in the Delta Episode bonus in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Pokémon games.
In the Hoenn region's mythology, it was said that Rayquaza stopped the fight between Groudon and Kyogre. It lives in the ozone layer far above the clouds and cannot be seen from the ground. It is noted for protecting its territory fiercely. An example of this was when a Deoxys, which had fallen from space in a meteor, appeared, Rayquaza thought that the Deoxys was invading its territory and so, attacked the Deoxys. This was in Destiny Deoxys, the 7th Pokemon movie.
Evolution
Rayquaza does not evolve normally. Rayquaza can Mega Evolve however, after learning the move, Dragon Ascent.
Game info
Rayquaza is a Generation III Pokémon, first appearing in the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games. In 2005, Rayquaza became the version mascot for the Pokémon Emerald game. In all three games, Rayquaza can only be obtained at the Sky Pillar. It can be caught after the eighth Gym (Only for Pokémon Emerald), making for an easy Elite Four.In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Rayquaza plays a key role in the story. Xatu warns all of the Pokémon in Pokémon Square that a large star is falling and is going to destroy the planet, and says that the only way to get rid of it is to ask Rayquaza to destroy it. The main character must use Xatu's teleporting stone to reach the Sky Tower, where Rayquaza dwells. When the main character meets Rayquaza, it is extremely enraged to see that Pokémon from the ground have come 'where they are not supposed to be'. When the player beats Rayquaza, it will realize its mistake. The star that will destroy the planet is coming near, so Rayquaza blasts it with its Hyper Beam. The blast is so overwhelming that the main character and his partner fall off the top of Sky Tower.
It can also be found in HeartGold and SoulSilver in Embedded Tower after the player obtains Kyogre (HeartGold) or Groudon (SoulSilver).

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Rayquaza is the second main boss the player must fight in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Adventure Mode, The Subspace Emissary. Diddy Kong runs to find help for Donkey Kong, and comes across a large lake. He notices a destroyed Arwing nearby, and goes to investigate. Rayquaza appears out of the lake, angry that Diddy trespassed into its territory. It grabs Diddy, but Fox emerges from the Arwing and uses Fox Illusion to free Diddy Kong from Rayquaza's grasp. The two quickly team up and defeat Rayquaza. Rayquaza's appearance is also notable because it is the only boss in The Subspace Emissary who is fought by a group that does not include any other characters from its own series. It is interesting to note that Rayquaza was found within the lake as opposed to its usual dwelling, the sky.
Rayquaza appears later in the Great Maze, as one of the eight bosses the player must face before completing the adventure.
Rayquaza also appears in Brawl's stadium, in a mode called Boss Battles. Rayquaza is one of the ten bosses that the player must fight.

Appearances
Anime
Rayquaza makes its debut in the 7th movie MS007: Pokémon - Destiny Deoxys. Like all other Legendary Pokémon, Rayquaza is a truly powerful Pokémon. Four years before the main movie, Rayquaza had fought against Deoxys because it thought the Pokémon was invading its territory when the meteorite Deoxys used for travel landed on the earth.
When Iris was leaving Blackthorn City with Axew and her newly captured Gible, she spotted Rayquaza flying through the clouds in the sky. A Shiny Rayquaza also appears in MS018: Pokémon The Movie - Hoopa and the Clash of Ages'x as an ally of Hoopa and Ash against Hoopa unbound, while another appears in the Mega Evolution Specials.
Trivia
- Along with Mewtwo (With the technique of Mega Evolution) Rayquaza has the highest BST of any Pokémon, with a base stat of 780.
- Rayquaza is one of few Pokémon resembling dragons from oriental lore along with Gyarados.
- Rayquaza is the only Pokémon boss in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
- Rayquaza is based on Ziz of Judeo-Christian religion.
- Rayquaza is one of only two Pokémon that can learn the move Fly by leveling up, the other being Salamence.
- Rayquaza is the only member of the Weather Trio to have a Mega Evolution instead of a Primal Reversion.
- Rayquaza is the first (and only) Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution without a Mega Stone. Instead, it is caused by knowing its signature move, Dragon Ascent.
- Rayquaza cannot mega evolve if it holds a Z-Crystal, even if it knows Dragon Ascent.
- Rayquaza's Mega-Evolved form is the second largest Pokémon, after Wailord.
- Mega Rayquaza is the first Pokémon to be banned from the Ubers tier, thus resulting in a new tier being made. This was due to its overpowered move Dragon Ascent (which could OHKO even Uber Tier Pokémon), as well as the fact that its lack of a Mega Stone meant it could hold stat-boosting items that could raise its already overly-powerful stats even more. As of now it is only allowed in the 'Anything Goes' tier.
- Mega Rayquaza is the tallest Flying-Type Pokémon and the tallest Legendary Pokémon.
- Rayquaza is one of the few legendary Pokémon to mega evolve.
- Rayquaza is the only member of the Weather Trio to have two types up until Gen VI, which introduced the dual-typed Primal reversion of Groudon.
- Rayquaza is known to eat meteors in the sky.
- Rayquaza is one of the collectable spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Etymology
Its name may be derived from ray and Quasa, describing how Rayquaza lives under the influence of solar phenomenon as the sun's rays.
Origin
Rayquaza may come from the derivation of the word quasar may be a misunderstanding of what really is a quasar, or an indication of a cosmic origin. Perhaps the Quaza is a reference to Quetzalcoatl as Quetzalcoatl is represented as 'feathered serpent'. This legend has made the heavens and the food for humans, and the heavens gave Rayquaza. We also see that Rayquaza could be the legendary creature known as Ziz or Renanim. It could also be based on the mythical dragon of Chinese and Japanese culture, (神龙) Shenlong. According to oriental mythology, Shenlong dwells in heaven and controls the climate, just as Rayquaza does. Rayquaza's appearance, having arms but not legs on a long serpentine body, may be inspired from nagas, beings from Asian mythology commonly depicted as being human from the waist up and snake from the waist down. It is also said that Rayquaza is supposed to represent the Ziz from the Bible, while its counterparts, Groudon and Kyogre, represent the Behemoth and Leviathan respectively. Its name also sound like the Japanese term 'retsu ku za' which means 'the one who sits in the ferocious heavens'.
